TCM Today: Thursday 12/13

Turner Classic Movies has become the hub for all lovers of old movies across the country. Many of us schedule our lives around the commercial free programming the channel offers us. This feature will include a breakdown of what a classic film enthusiast can recommend of TCM’s daily offerings. Margaret Perry has loved old movies for most of her life. She devotes most of her time and energy to her blog, The Great Katharine Hepburn. You can follow Margaret on Twitter @MargaretPerryKH or find her on FacebookTumblrPinterestLetterboxdGoodreads, and WordPress.

Last night’s celebration of Barbara Stanwyck continues all day today, ending with Illicit (1931) at 5:45 pm. I look forward to seeing Stanwyck reunited with Henry Fonda in Leigh Jason’s The Mad Miss Manton (1938) at 11:15 am. When a impish young socialite Melsa Manton (Stanwyck) reports finding a body, nobody believes her. When said body then disappears, Melsa and her friends must investigate the case themselves.

TCM is getting in on the hype surrounding Anne Hathaway’s pending film remake of the Broadway musical “Les Misérables”  by hosting an evening of films based on Victor Hugo‘s classic novel.

8:00 pm Les Miserables (1935)
Directed by Richard Boleslawski
Starring Fredric March, Charles Laughton, and Cecil Hardwicke

Les Miserables (1935)

10:00 pm Les Misérables (1952)
Directed by Lewis Milestone
Starring: Michael Rennie, Debra Paget, Robert Newton, Edmund Gwenn, and Elsa Lanchester

12:00 am Les Misérables (1934)
Directed by Raymond Bernard
Starring  a bunch of French people I’ve never heard of. It’s a French movie. I’m going to do a cop-out and direct you to this really interesting article TCM has written on this epically accurate rendition of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece.
*Note: this movie is about 4 hours long, so you might want to take a nap earlier in the day if you plan on making it through this movie tonight.

For a full schedule of TCM‘s line-up for tomorrow, be sure to check out their website. I can also recommend investing in a subscription to their “Now Playing” guide. In it you get all the showtimes, plus articles about the special features. But my favorite part is the crossword puzzle at the back! I look forward to hearing what you watched and what you loved today on TCM!

  1. It’s a Les Miserables love fest! I need to check out the older versions. I have a special place in my heart for the one starring Liam Neeson though.
