TCM Today: Wednesday 12/19

The first film on offer this morning on Turner Classic Movies is a Katharine Hepburn film! Undercurrent (1946) is Hepburn’s only suspense film, and the only project she worked on with director Vincente Minnelli. It co-starred Robert Taylor and Robert Mitchum, whom Hepburn found incredibly overrated.

Like every other Wednesday in December, primetime tonight will feature several films starring Barbara Stanwyck, TCM’s star of the month. Stanwyck’s work in the genre of film noir will be shown tonight, including the film many believe to be her best in any genre. Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity (1944) stars Fred MacMurray as the insurance salesman who falls in love with Stanwyck’s character and conspires with her to bump off her husband. As Leonard Maltin says in his review of the film: “An American movie classic, with crackling dialogue throughout.”

Below is a list of the other Stanwyck film noir features on tonight. I highly recommend Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), which I originally heard on the radio starring Agnes Morehead as the main character, an invalid who accidentally overhears a murder plot on the telephone.
