TCM Today: Monday 1/7

Sorry I went AWOL over the holidays, but I am back with a vengeance. To see an overview of what to expect this month on Turner Classic Movies, check out this post on my blog The Great Katharine Hepburn!

Guest programmer Bill Paxton was recently nominated for an Emmy award for the TV mini-series Hatfields & McCoys. Tonight he has chosen four films that influenced his coming of age in Fort Worth, Texas.

TCM will be showing a Katharine Hepburn movie tomorrow at 11:30 am, but I wouldn’t get too excited. The Sea of Grass (1947) is one of the more lesser known films starring Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Elia Kazan‘s epic western is a bit of a downer and tends to drag mercilessly through a plot fit for the very worst of daytime soaps. Have fun with that one.

However, immediately before The Sea of Grass will be a George Cukor classic starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. Gaslight (1944) is on at 9:30 am. If you haven’t seen this riveting suspense about a new bride’s fears of insanity in an old family mansion, you might want set your DVR this morning.

During the holiday season, you might have read a number of blog posts about film adaptations of Louisa May Alcott‘s fictional classic, “Little Women.” I know Kristen over at Journeys in Classic Film has been comparing the various films, and on The Great Katharine Hepburn you can vote on your personal favorite. This afternoon TCM will be showing my least favorite, but Kristen’s most favorite, version of the story. Mervyn Leroy’s Little Women (1949) will be on at 1:45 pm and stars June Allyson, Margaret O’Brien, and Elizabeth Taylor.LW

For a full schedule of TCM‘s line-up, be sure to check out their website. I can also recommend investing in a subscription to their “Now Playing” guide. In it you get all the showtimes, plus articles about the special features. But my favorite part is the crossword puzzle at the back! I look forward to hearing what you watched and what you loved today on TCM!
